Abortion Medication Instructions
Medication Instructional Images (2024): Illustrated instructional images for an over-the-counter medication abortion package prototype*, created for ANSIRH’s research study presented at the National Abortion Federation's 48th Annual Meeting (Poster Abstract 22: Acceptability of a Prototype Over-the-Counter Medication Abortion Package Among People Seeking Medication Abortion).

Impact: . When approached with this project, the buccal administration instructions was a particular area of confusion for patients. The study concluded that patients found the instructional leaflet to be helpful during their abortion to understand the medication abortion regimen, in particular buccal administration, and that the illustrations provided clarity.
Due to positive feedback by patients and providers, these images are also being used in counseling sessions and paperwork sent home with patients. I wanted the images to be clear for patients from different backgrounds, especially those with English as a second language.

Process Work
Concept Sketches
The client wanted to create a series of images detailing how to take oral abortion medication. The key area of communication was to convey the placement in the space between the cheek and gum. The client had previously created images that were not resonating with the target test group.
Linear Draft
Linear drafts were created using blue/yellow to distinguish the two different medications. The images were presented to the test target group with positive feedback.
Final Draft and Color Palette
A final limited color palette was created based on the 4 colors approved for print (black, blue, yellow, green).
